Lucile Packard Children鈥檚 Hospital Stanford and Kohl鈥檚 Department Stores Team Up for Child Safety

For Release: October 14, 2011

PALO ALTO, Calif. 鈥 On Monday, October 17, Kohl鈥檚 Department Stores, in partnership with Lucile Packard Children鈥檚 Hospital Stanford, will host a free car seat safety event at its Redwood City location. This event is part of Kohl鈥檚 Child Safety and Outreach Program at Lucile Packard Children鈥檚 Hospital Stanford, an ongoing partnership to reduce harm to Bay Area children. Officers from the California Highway Patrol and bilingual certified technicians from Packard Children鈥檚 will inspect car seats and provide parents with information and best practices. Appointments for a car seat fitting with a certified technician at this event can be made online聽or by calling (650) 736-2981.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, motor vehicle crashes remain the leading cause of injury-related death among children in the United States. Child safety seats and safety belts, when installed and used correctly, can prevent injuries and save lives. Yet experts estimate that as many as four out of five car seats are still installed incorrectly. 鈥淚mproving car seat installation is an important initiative in our efforts to reduce motor vehicle related injuries,鈥 states Nancy Sanchez, Community Relations Manager at Lucile Packard Children鈥檚 Hospital. 鈥淲e are pleased to have such a committed partner in Kohl鈥檚 that shares our commitment to keeping Bay Area children safe.鈥

At the event on October 17, Kohl鈥檚 will also present Packard Children鈥檚 with a check for this year鈥檚 grant, totaling $170,759. Support from Kohl鈥檚 will enable the Child Safety and Outreach Program to continue promoting car seat, bicycle, and pedestrian safety at health fairs and community events across the South Bay and Peninsula. Since 2005, Kohl鈥檚 has donated over $725,000 to Packard Children鈥檚 to help promote the health and safety of local children.

Kohl鈥榮 commitment to Packard Children鈥檚 is made possible through the Kohl鈥榮 Cares庐 cause merchandise program. Through this initiative, Kohl鈥檚 sells $5 books and plush toys where 100 percent of net profit benefits children鈥檚 health and education programs nationwide. Kohl鈥榮 has raised over $180 million through this merchandise program. In addition to the merchandise program, Kohl鈥榮 Cares庐 features the Kohl鈥榮 Cares庐 Scholarship Program, which last year recognized more than 2,100 young volunteers with a total of $410,000 in scholarships and prizes. Through Kohl鈥檚 Associates in Action volunteer program, more than 385,000 associates have donated over 1.2 million hours of their time since 2001 and Kohl鈥檚 has donated over $35 million to youth-focused nonprofit organizations.
